The official checklist has fourteen items. The core is a petition through your lawyer, a sworn statement renouncing your current nationality, clean background records, proof of solvency, your tax clearance and the knowledge exam.

Naturalization is a long file because it has to prove a long story: years of lawful residency, a clean record, solvency and your ties to Panama. The official checklist has fourteen items, and some of them come from Panamanian offices, such as your tax clearance and your immigration status certificate. We build the file in the order the authorities review it.

- 1 Power of attorney and petition Through a lawyer, addressed to the President of the Republic, with your full personal details, your permanent residency card number, your parents’ names and nationality, and your free wish to become Panamanian.

- 2 Sworn statement Before a notary: your reasons, your express and irrevocable renunciation of your current nationality and your wish to become Panamanian.

- 3 No criminal record From your country of residence for the last five years, or your country of origin, as applicable; plus Panama’s criminal record certificate for naturalization (valid 30 days).

- 4 Permanent residency card Copy authenticated by the Electoral Tribunal.

- 5 Marriage and birth certificates For the three-year route: marriage certificate, your spouse’s birth certificate and your Panamanian children’s birth certificates.

- 6 Proof of solvency (two of these) Tax returns for the last two years; a bank letter showing an average balance in four figures; an employment letter with Social Security record; a retirement certificate; property in your name or through a company or foundation you ultimately own; or capital invested in an operating business.

- 7 Naturalization interview form Downloaded from Immigration’s website and completed by you, in blue ink and block letters.

- 8 Tax clearance (paz y salvo) From Panama’s tax authority (DGI).

- 9 Full passport copy Showing the foreigner registration stamp, authenticated by your consulate and certified by Panama’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, with translation where needed.

- 10 Medical certificate of good health Valid 90 days.

- 11 Certificate of immigration status For naturalization use (valid 90 days).

- 12 Reciprocity law For the reciprocity route: an authenticated copy of your country’s reciprocity law and a certificate that it is in force.

- 13 Photos Size 3.5 × 4.5 cm, in formal attire.

- 14 Knowledge exam Administered by the Electoral Tribunal, with the exemptions explained on our exam page.

Applicants who are dependents (for example, a homemaker or a student) prove solvency through the person responsible for them, with a letter of responsibility and that person’s documents.
